RNA plays a pivotal role in biological systems due to its numerous function in the transfer and processing of genetic information. The unique properties of RNA have stimulated the development of a variety of applications in diagnostics and therapeutics, as well as in basic molecular biology research where RNA can be used as:

Catalytic agents (ribozymes)

Affinity ligands (aptamers)

Agents to induce gene silencing (RNA interference)
Today, RNA interference (RNAi) has become a popular tool for the sequence-specific inhibition of gene expression and can be used in target validation and other drug development techniques. The most convenient method to provide sequence specific RNA oligonucleotides is chemical synthesis on a solid support with RNA phosphoramidites and RNA CPG, analogous to DNA synthesis.
